Japanese name (Kanji): 大平 烏

Name breakdown:

  • 大平 (Ohira) — a western Kyoto mine (Nishi Mono) located near Mt. Atago. One of the few mines still occasionally active. Full designation: 大平山合砥石 (Ohira-kōzan gō-toishi = Ohira mine finishing/polishing stone).
  • 烏 (Karasu) — visual/color attribute meaning "crow": a dark blue-black-and-white pattern within the stone resembling crows in flight against a darkening sky. Karasu indicates origin from the Aisa layer (合さ) of the Hon-Kuchi Naori strata. Karasu stones almost exclusively come from the Aisa layer, which sits at the boundary between Tomae and Namito. The Aisa layer has only four seams and is known for high hardness and abrasive force, but also for a higher probability of impurities.

Mining region: Ohira mine (大平山), western Kyoto (Nishi Mono), near Mt. Atago. One of the few Kyoto whetstone mines that is still occasionally active (along with Maruoyama). Stock is also available from material stored by major wholesalers (Tanaka, Imanishi, Hatanaka, Asano). The Hon-Kuchi Naori seam at Ohira connects westward to Yaginoshima and eastward toward Atagoyama, Ozuku, Okudo, and Nakayama.

Grit rating (JIS equivalent): Ohira stones in general are described as approximately 9,000–10,000 JIS. Karasu/Aisa origin implies harder, denser material which tends toward the upper end of the fineness range.

LV Hardness: LV 4–5 (hard to very hard). Ohira Karasu is documented as "comparatively hard" and requires nagura. The Aisa layer from which Karasu originates is known for hardness. Individual specimens on the market have been noted at hardness 3.5–5 depending on the specific seam, but Karasu from Aisa is typically on the harder end. Not recommended for beginners.

Recommended progression: After a synthetic 6,000–8,000 JIS stone. Intended for final finishing of high-quality knives. Nagura is required.

Composition: Siliceous shale, Aisa layer (合さ) of the Hon-Kuchi Naori geological formation. The Aisa layer sits below Tomae and above Namito, with only four seams. Karasu patterning (dark blue-black areas) is caused by carbonaceous or organic material concentrated during sediment compression. Aisa stones are noted for high abrasive force but also for a higher incidence of impurities compared to Tomae or Namito. The Ohira mine specifically produces a rare variant with Karasu layers distributed from the surface through to the bottom of the stone.

Steels to sharpen: Well suited for hammered blades and high-carbon Japanese steels and traditionally forged blades.

Sturdy, works great, not quite perfect.
Color: silver
This was the perfect stand to use when my desktop computer crashed and I had to work on my laptop without killing my neck. It's sturdy, well made, and works exactly as advertised. Adjustment is smooth and simple. I was able to work with my monitor at a comfortable height and distance, and it saved my bacon! But, would I want to work on it indefinitely? No. Two things are lacking for me. First, there's a height adjustment, but no angle control. This means that at its max height, the display has a small downward tilt. It also means that on zoom calls, I had to fiddle with the monitor height until my whole head was framed, rather than cut off. Not a dealbreaker, but annoying over the long term, especially with lots of zoom meetings. Second, I'm not sure why I was surprised, but the stand-plus-laptop combo created a kind of aluminum "monolith" on my desktop. I couldn't bend to peer under it, or over it either. It felt as though part of my desk (albeit a narrow portion) became inaccessible. This too is a quibble--I just happen to like a more open and airy feeling. These two nits aside, this is a sturdy and well designed stand that works well and will last a long time.

Replacement stickers are on the way!!
Color: silver, Color: silver
Edit: Customer service was lovely and I have replacement stickers on the way. This fabulous product has helped me so much and I can't be without it. Back up to a 5 star review. I purchased this product in April 2024. The stickers that help the laptop 'grab' onto the stand are either gone or unstable. See picture below. Can it be repaired with new stickers? How do I get them?

Sixty Bucks? Yep. And I'd buy another one.
Color: silver
OK, I had my doubts. Yes, the iLevel2 is highly-reviewed. And yes, it's really (really) important to have your laptop screen at eye level (get it? iLevel?) But spending 60 dollars on an adjustable laptop stand? Couldn't I just pile up a couple of old books for free? Well, as a contractor once told me when I made a really dumb suggestion, "You COULD do it that way..." The iLevel2's main virtue is that the angle/height adjustment knob is rock-solid, as is the platform. It's just an extremely well-made, solid product. And the adjustment knob, which is on a left-right track on the front of the product, allows you to dial in your laptop's screen height to the millimeter. Result: a totally-custom, ergonomically-friendly setup. Love it.

Underwhelming
Color: silver
Too much hype. It just holds the laptop. Buy something cheaper. The slide adjuster isn’t useful to me at all.

Useful but not perfect
Color: silver
Useful, but typing with laptop perched on it is unsteady. I use a separate keyboard.
