🖋 Provenance Story – Italianate Landscape after Claude Lorrain

This piece came to us from an old East Sussex townhouse — the kind with walls thick enough to hide centuries and shelves full of catalogues from Sotheby’s and Spink. The painting was hanging in a stairwell, half-shadowed, yet quietly radiant — a classical landscape with the sort of golden softness only Claude Lorrain or his followers could conjure.

We were instantly drawn to its balance: the cargo ships, the arcadian banks of what is almost certainly the River Po, and the gentle haze dissolving the scene into a dream. A closer study revealed its lineage — this painting isn’t just in the style of Lorrain, it’s closely related to a known 1769 engraving by Boydell and James Mason, itself after one of Lorrain’s works now in the National Gallery of Art, Washington. That connection gives this piece gravitas, not just visually, but historically.

The source painting once belonged to Robert Trevor, 4th Baron Trevor, and later the 1st Viscount Hampden. Our version, likely produced in the late 18th or early 19th century, reflects the Grand Tour appetite for classical scenes — a cultural souvenir for aristocrats bringing home the romance of Rome and the Italian countryside.

What makes this one particularly special is its emotional charge: the delicate craquelure, the soft greens and dusky blues, the misted light that Lorrain made so iconic. It’s been professionally relined and restored, housed now in a contemporary frame that lets the composition breathe without compromising its classical soul.

For collectors, decorators, or anyone craving a sense of visual calm and continental gravitas, this is a painting that whispers rather than shouts. It doesn’t just decorate a wall. It sets a tone.

Very similar to the Landscape with Merchants in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

Our version could be after the engraving by Boydell and James Mason on 1st January 1769.

Interestingly, the source painting for the painting was once in the collection of Robert Trevor, 4th Baron Trevor (from 1764), and subsequently (from 1776) 1st Viscount Hampden.

Biography: Italianate landscape after Claude Lorrain

Claude Lorrain, also known as Claude Gellée, was a French painter who lived from 1600 to 1682. He was born in the small village of Champagn, in the region of Lorraine, hence his name. Claude is considered one of the greatest landscape painters of his time and is known for his atmospheric depictions of nature.

Claude was orphaned at a young age and was raised by his elder brother, who was a woodcarver. At the age of 13, he moved to Rome to work as an apprentice to the painter Agostino Tassi. In Rome, he became fascinated by the natural landscape and began painting landscapes himself.

Claude's paintings were highly influential in the development of landscape painting as a separate genre, and he became famous for his ability to capture the essence of nature in his works. His landscapes often featured idealised settings with a golden glow and soft, hazy light, giving them a dreamlike quality.

Claude was highly regarded during his lifetime and was patronised by many wealthy and influential individuals, including King Louis XIV of France. He spent most of his life in Rome but also travelled extensively throughout Italy and France. He was a member of the Academy of St. Luke in Rome and was highly respected by his fellow artists.

Claude's legacy as a painter has endured to this day, and he is considered one of the most important painters of the Baroque era. His influence can be seen in the works of many later artists, including J.M.W. Turner and John Constable.

Nice room divider!
Color: White, Size: 8 Panel
The white panels are a nice off-white color. shipped in perfect condition. Already assembled so set up was quick. We use them to separate a photo studio from the main entry. Easily covers a 6 Ft. opening to the room. They are a woven material with wood colored sticks to support the weave. They are about 6 Ft. tall at the top of the curved section but less at the hinged sections. Light and easy to set up and take down. We are straddling two different floors so the extended legs at the bottom make this easy. Not sure how to clean them but they look great so far!

Instant Privacy
Color: Beige, Size: 8 Panel
Bought this to separate a ground level living area used as an office. Works well to cover visual clutter; allows a clean look when entering the front door. Comes fully assembled. Hinges are sturdy enough, as long as the panels aren’t stretched too far; have to allow some bend between them. For the price point, quality and functionality are satisfactory.

Great Divider, Just Needed Anchoring for Outdoor Use
Color: Grey, Size: 6 Panel
This room divider is very nice—stylish, lightweight, and easy to set up. I’m using it outdoors, which may not be its intended use, and I found that wind can knock it over pretty easily. Once I anchored it down, though, it worked just fine and looks great in the space. Indoors, I imagine it would be perfect right out of the box. Overall, a solid purchase with just one small adjustment needed for my setup.

Good Quality
Color: White, Size: 4 Panel
They are made with good quality. However I bought them to help with blocking outside light and the white does not do that.

Very nice looking divider. We are using as a privacy divider around our hot tub. We have not left it out in the weather yet due to many storms coming through.
