‘Pied à Terre’ (“foot to earth”) embraces the philosophy that “the farmer’s footprint is the best fertilizer” ie. that attention to detail and meticulous care in the vineyard provide the most important foundation for making great wines. 2018 marks the first release of ‘Love on Mars’, its lavish style a nod to the glam-rock of David Bowie (a favorite inspiration of sommelier Richard Luftig, who along with winemakers Clay Mauritson and Emma Kudritzki, form the heart and soul of Pied à Terre.) 2018 provided the first “normal” growing season in many years, with cooler temperatures and moderate weather resulting in great concentration of fruit without overripeness. Half of the grapes were sourced from the Nimble vineyard (mountain fruit - lending a firm backbone), with the other half coming from Aunt Cathy’s vineyard (valley floor fruit which contributes richness.) ‘Love on Mars’ is a unique selection of barrels that were discovered to have aged a bit quicker and more sumptuously than the others. After sampling and blending, the wine was bottled with minimal sulfur added, resulting in a cuvée that is fresh and vibrant. The long growing season provided great aromatic complexity, with a palate that remains lushly textured yet crackling with energy. A profusion of dark raspberry, blackberry, cherry, and blueberry flavors melds with delicate layers of violets, cocoa nibs, and baking spices. It finishes fresh and long, maintaining mouthwatering acidity and firmly integrated tannins.
