Montipora confusa is a wonderfully eccentric coral. It’s like a Montipora that couldn’t decide whether it wanted to grow like a plating cap or a branching digitata, so it does both at the same time. That indecision gives it a beautiful, sculptural shape in a reef tank.

Temperament and growth

Confusa grows as a thickened plate with stubby vertical projections. It’s not fragile like some caps and not as brittle as digitatas. Because it builds dense skeleton, it handles flow and tank bumps nicely.

Lighting

Moderate to high light works best. Around 150 to 250 PAR keeps the green base vivid and the purple or blue growth ridges sharp. Under very strong light you get tighter growth and stronger color separation.

Flow

Medium to high, ideally turbulent. Enough to keep the surface clean and avoid sediment collecting in the folds. The coral prefers motion that shakes the polyps rather than pushing them in a single direction.

Placement

Mid-level placement is ideal. Give it space above and below because Confusa likes to build thickness and height as it grows. It can shade whatever sits underneath due to its layered plate shape.

Water parameters

Montipora tend to be forgiving within reason. Confusa follows that trend.

Calcium around 420.
Alkalinity around 8 to 8.8.
Magnesium around 1350.
Nitrate around 5 to 15.
Phosphate around 0.03 to 0.1.

It flourishes in stable, nutrient-positive systems. Ultra-low nutrients wash out the color and slow growth.

Feeding

It eats mainly through light and dissolved nutrients. Occasional amino acids help with richness, but not required. A tank with consistent fish load usually gives Confusa all the nitrogen it desires.

Sensitivities and pests

Montis are the favorite snack of Montipora-eating nudibranchs. Any new Monti frag should be dipped, inspected with a flashlight, and checked at night for tiny, white, rice-grain nudis. Confusa shows stress through pale patches and polyp retraction when alkalinity swings hard.

System compatibility

It coexists peacefully with most LPS and SPS. Its only threat is shading neighbors with its layered plates. It’s a great coral for adding shape without the fragility of Acropora.

LIP GOO GOOD ENOUGH FOR EDS PATIENTS!!! I have old school type3, the super bad…
First of all… I used to have a desserts catering side hustle and my oatmeal scotchie recipe starts smelling EXACTLY like this combo!!! I am 51 and have tried LITERALLY THOUSANDS of chapstick type lip goos, I have a genetic disorder that prevents me from being able to absorb anything… most to all chapsticks DO NOT WORK but my lips are currently soft… it actually feels amazing to have something on my lips that seems to work!!! Instead on sitting on my lips or skin all weird and greasy til I freak out rub everything off!!! It’s working… NOT SOMETHING I WAS ACTUALLY WILLING TO ADMIT TO… My VEGAN MOTHER talked me into trying this, she’s more absorbent and can use other products, I cannot, however!!! I seriously LOVE THIS GOO!!!

absolute life saver on a winter trip to austria, and has become my go-to every day since! even before my trip i was struggling with chapped lips and this healed them and protected them through winter sports better than anything i’ve ever used, and i’m a lip balm snob. smells amazing, feels amazing. 10/10!

Wow! So moisturizing!
OMGosh, this feels so good on your lips! I just got this today so I’ll have to update if the moisture doesn’t last. But so far it feels nice. I did have a slight issue with it melting onto itself in the one day it took to get to me. See photos. The tube itself was slightly concave because of the melting. But is still intact. So far though I love this stuff!

Pretty good stuff
Not a miracle cream, but I've certainly paid more for worse lip balm. The tallow is helping keep my lips hydrated, and it feels great when applied. Just got Invisalign, and I struggle with hydration normally, but this is helping keep the lips soft and smooth, and is miles ahead of the cheap drugstore brands that dry more than they help.

Worth a try, I guess.
Picked up this beef tallow lip balm for my husband. We had the worst winter and everything was so dry. He is used to using the waxy sticks you buy at the big box stores to treat his dry lips. He has been using tallow and I noticed this lip balm and thought he might like it. The stick is quite big. Thicker than the normal waxy stick you might buy at the store. In line with some of the larger sticks I have seen in the stores by some of the men's lines that are out there. He used it often and found it to work well. Did it work better than some of the waxy sticks from the store, he didn't think so but it was on par with those. He does like that it is natural. He told me that he would apply it and his lips would feel good and it would last for a while and just like any other product he would try, his lips would be dry again after a while. I would say that generally, it sounds like an average product but it's natural. Worth a try, I guess!
