Pom Pom Short Tentacle Hard Coral (Goniopora sp.)

(Also known as Flowerpot Coral, Daisy Coral, or Short Tentacle Goniopora)

Overview

The Pom Pom Short Tentacle Hard Coral (Goniopora sp.) is a visually captivating large-polyp stony (LPS) coral, characterised by its dense clusters of short, daisy-like polyps that gently sway in the current, creating a soft, pom-pom effect. Its compact growth form makes it ideal for smaller aquariums or tighter aquascapes, offering vivid colouration and movement without occupying excessive space. Available in greens, pinks, reds, purples, and metallic hues, Goniopora adds a delicate, natural elegance to reef displays. Though once considered difficult to maintain, improved husbandry and coral foods have made this species far more accessible to modern reef aquarists.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Great Barrier Reef, Coral Sea, Fiji, Tonga, Indonesia, and the Red Sea. Typically found in sheltered reef slopes and lagoons, where lighting is moderate and water movement gentle.

Feeding

The Pom Pom Short Tentacle Coral is photosynthetic, hosting zooxanthellae that provide much of its nutrition. However, regular feeding greatly enhances health, colour, and polyp density. Feed 2–3 times per week with:

  • Marine snow or microplankton
  • Phytoplankton and powdered coral foods (e.g., reef roids or coral dust)
  • Rotifers or fine suspended particulate foods

Feed during low flow to ensure particles settle over the extended polyps.

Lighting

Moderate lighting. Provide bright but diffused illumination using LED, T5, or hybrid lighting systems.

  • PAR range: 100–200 ¬µmol/m¬≤/s
  • Avoid direct, high-intensity light which can cause retraction or bleaching.
  • Blue-spectrum or actinic lighting enhances fluorescence and brings out intricate tip colouration.
Water Flow

Low to moderate, indirect flow. Gentle, variable currents are ideal, allowing the short tentacles to move naturally. Strong, direct flow can cause the polyps to retract or damage delicate tissue.

Placement
  • Position on mid to lower rockwork or open substrate, where it receives moderate light and calm, swirling flow.
  • Allow 10 cm (4 inches) of space around the coral to prevent irritation from other species.
  • Avoid contact with sharp rock or nearby aggressive corals, as Goniopora tissue is delicate.
Tank Mates

Reef safe with caution. Compatible with:

  • Peaceful reef fish (gobies, blennies, tangs, wrasses, clownfish, etc.)
  • Snails, shrimp, and small hermit crabs
  • Other peaceful LPS and soft corals at safe distances

Avoid:

  • Aggressive corals (e.g., Euphyllia, Galaxea, Hydnophora)
  • Large angelfish and butterflyfish that may nip at the polyps
Aggression

Peaceful.Goniopora does not possess strong stinging tentacles and relies on spacing rather than aggression for territory. However, it can be harmed by the sweeper tentacles of nearby corals.

Experience Level

Intermediate to advanced. The Pom Pom Short Tentacle Coral thrives under stable water parameters and consistent care. It is more forgiving than long-tentacle varieties but still requires regular feeding and careful placement for long-term success.

Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
  • Alkalinity (dKH): 8–10
  • Calcium: 420–450 ppm
  • Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
  • Nitrate: 2–10 ppm
  • Phosphate: 0.02–0.05 ppm
  • Tank Size: Minimum 100 litres (25 gallons); larger systems preferred for stability

Maintain consistent trace elements, particularly iron and manganese, which aid Goniopora health and polyp extension.

Reef Compatibility

Reef safe. The Pom Pom Short Tentacle Coral is an elegant, flowing coral that brings colour and life to mixed reef aquariums. Its compact, tufted growth and peaceful temperament make it an excellent choice for aquarists wanting to showcase movement and natural texture in their reefscape.

Interesting Fact

Each Goniopora polyp has 24 short tentacles, giving the coral its iconic “pom pom” appearance. Its close relative, Alveopora, has only 12 tentacles per polyp, which is the easiest way to tell the two apart.

It's hard af.
Color: Right - Grey, Size: Small, Color: Right - Grey, Size: Small
Edit: just realized Amazon sent me a left handed one! I got this one and the g2 or whatever with the strap. The g2 is great. This one is hard though. The edges of the rest thingy. And the edges in the middle where it splits are annoying. Idk if it's a difference in the rubber pads or what. Even if this works for wrist pain, it's not worth it for the palm discomfort.

Ergonomic and effective, but requires adjustment.
Color: Right - White, Size: Large
Bought this for improving wrist posture during long hours at the desk. What I like • The ergonomic design helps reduce wrist strain, especially during extended typing sessions. • The right-handed orientation is comfortable and natural to use. • High-quality build, feels sturdy and durable. What could be better • It takes some time to adjust to the unique design, especially if you’re used to traditional mice. • The size may not be suitable for people with smaller hands. • It could be a bit pricey compared to other ergonomic mice on the market. Bottom line: A great investment for improving wrist posture and reducing strain, but it might not be for everyone due to the learning curve and price. Perfect for users looking to enhance ergonomics, but consider alternatives if you have smaller hands or need a more budget-friendly option.

It’s painful. Not worth it.
Color: Right - Grey, Size: Small, Color: Right - Grey, Size: Small
I hate it. Period. Very strong feelings about it right out of the box. Gave it a few days, and not only do I still hate it but it’s very painful to use. The rubber material is hard and has pressure points that make you come away feeling like you’ve rested your wrist on the edge of a table for too long. I come away more sore using this than not. They only have small and large sizes, I think the small is too small for me? (I’m not sure. I can tell it doesn’t fit well, but I can’t tell if it’s because it’s too small or the shape isn’t right for my wrist). In any event, I am sure the large would be too large and even if they had a medium size I still wouldn’t repurchase this. Maybe if you’ve got some meat on your bones it would be more comfortable but as you can see, I am a very thin person and this is pressing on all the wrong places. I also feel like the center valley part contributes to carpal tunnel pain because the very firm edges of each side rested right in that area, not offering any support to the valley of the wrist, and therefore creating pressure to that nerve center and the ligaments. I don’t know why they chose this material, it’s too firm. Also, I think a better design would be a little tab from the center of it sticking out and then attaching to the bottom of the mouse so that both mouse and the wrist “support” worked as one unit when moving the mouse around. I often found that I didn’t drag the wrist piece with my mouse well and that it caused even more issues. If it were comfortable I would have made a little tab myself and connected the mouse and the wrist rest together, but as it’s extremely not even remotely comfortable I’m not bothering and I’ve already started the return process.

Quality Product, Definitely Recommend
Size: 17.2"L x 3.15"W x 0.78"H, Color: Black Walnut, Size: 17.2"L x 3.15"W x 0.78"H, Color: Black Walnut
Looks and feels great. Amazingly smooth, and well-crafted. It fits the length of my keyboard, and has quality grippers on the base to prevent sliding. Was actually really pleased with it.

High quality solid wood rest
Size: 14.4"L x 3.15"W x 0.78"H, Color: Black Walnut
This wrist rest is nicely finished and was well packed in high-density foam as well as a cardboard box that was wrapped very tightly in thick plastic. It's sanded very, very smooth and is made of beautiful solid walnut, with nonskid pads on the back. The branding is on the side that touches the keyboard, so it is not visible or obtrusive at all. My keyboard is 15.5 inches long, and the 14.4 inch rest looks great up against it. The 0.78" thickness is also very suitable for the thickness of my keyboard. The product gets 5 stars because it is accurately represented and this is entirely down to personal preference, but something about this rest that I don't love is the degree of incline. I have my keyboard up on the kickstands, and the wrist rest that I already owned slopes pretty dramatically starting from the middle, so it follows the angle of the keyboard. The ZQL wrist rest is about 75% flat and then has a small slope that rounds off on the bottom edge. Again, this is very much a personal thing; I just brought it up because it's something that people might not think too much about until they actually use it. I think this rest would be great for anyone with very large hands, or with a flat keyboard. It's taking a little getting used to for me, but I really enjoy the smoothness and obvious quality of the wood. A wrist rest is an ergonomic must when it comes to thicker keyboards.
