Доля спершу щедро обдаровує його  — знайомством із впливовим дядьком-сенатором, але потім, так само раптово, все відбирає — і юнак опиняється на вулиці без засобів до існування.

До того ж,  через свою дитячу наївність, Карл потрапляє у погану компанію, причому знайомство з цими людьми дорого йому коштуватиме в майбутньому. Далі будуть пошуки роботи, несподівані злети і падіння. Іноді доля, та й оточуючі також, дуже жорстоко обходитиметься з  юнаком. Однак те, що роман не був закінчений автором, залишає надію, що у Карла, врешті-решт, все буде добре, він із честю вийде з усіх випробувань і при цьому залишиться самим собою.
