At Emperor scale, the Namiki Emperor Maki-e Fountain Pen - Rakucho Bird and Weeping Cherry Blossom presents a serene tableau drawn from classical Japanese art. A long-tailed rakucho glides through cascading cherry boughs, each petal and plume articulated in luminous maki-e over deep urushi lacquer. The result is a commanding writing instrument that unites Namiki's flagship No. 50 nib with studio lacquer craft in a composition of quiet movement and spring light.

Craftsmanship & Design

The Emperor is built on an ebonite foundation, repeatedly coated with natural urushi and cured to a rich, organic luster. Over this ground, the scene is composed with precious metal powders and layered lacquer work that create gentle relief, subtle shadow, and a soft, reflective depth. The rakucho's elongated tail feathers sweep across the barrel, balanced by the graceful fall of weeping cherry blossoms, their fine stamens and drifting petals flowing seamlessly across cap and barrel. Polished surfaces and delicately raised accents play with light, giving the motif a calm vitality that rewards close study.

Writing Experience

Namiki's No. 50 18k gold nib defines the Emperor's unmistakable presence on the page. Generously proportioned yet finely tuned, it delivers a relaxed, stable line with the touch-responsive ease that experienced writers prize. The large ebonite feed supports consistent flow, while the eyedropper filling system with a shut-off valve provides exceptional ink capacity and reliable travel security. Open the valve slightly for extended sessions; close it for transport and storage. In hand, the warm ebonite, thoughtful balance, and expansive gripping area turn long-form writing into an unhurried ritual.

Heritage

Namiki, the artisanal house of Pilot, has paired Japanese urushi lacquer traditions with precision fountain pen engineering since the early 20th century. The Emperor platform sits at the apex of that collaboration, offering a canvas worthy of complex maki-e composition and a nib engineered for a lifetime of service. This Rakucho and Weeping Cherry Blossom edition draws on enduring seasonal and auspicious themes, interpreted with restraint and clarity by Namiki's in-house lacquer atelier in Japan.

Fun, but fragile
Format: Hardcover
This is a cool book, and my 2.5 year old son LOVES it. However it is important to note that it will be destroyed very quickly. There are lots of flaps and moving parts and it is very easy to accidentally rip them off if you try to move one in a way it's not meant for. I ripped more than 1 myself.

I order these for new salespeople and managers who have no construction experience. They think it's a joke until they start going through it.

The Darkness Creates Monsters
Format: Paperback
I really like this dark fantasy comic series. A long time ago, the world turned into darkness. The sun did not shine any more, and anybody who was in the dark for too long turned into a monster. Humans still survive. They drive around and live. The monsters are afraid of light. The artwork is really really good. Monsters and humans are drawn with excellent detail. You can actually see what's going on. The fight scenes are easy to understand. Can't wait to read Volume 2.

Excellent
Format: Paperback
This was one of my favorites. It has great world-building, great characters, an interesting worthy antagonist, and great art. The narrative flows naturally with a good mix of action and character development. We know who everyone is, what they're trying to accomplish, and what the stakes are. We're engaged with it never spins its wheels. I'm a reader, not a collector of singles, so I'm looking forward to vol 2.
