The Inspiration Behind this Painting
By now, you know my art is born from the moments when I feel small and humbled by the scale of the planet. My brain unleashes a special rush of dopamine when I am just an ant staring out into a glacial lake that could swallow me whole, and the ripples from my impact wouldn’t even reach the shoreline, like a grain of sand dropped into a puddle. When we hiked up to this volcanic crater filled with glacial melt, it was clear that natural forces far more powerful than any human had arrived there long before me. When I painted Oversized Puddle, I wanted to capture that scale, the geological history, and our human presence as two Little Dudes high-fiving in Type 2 Fun bliss. Mountains covered in lichen framed the background, with purple crater walls and brick-red sand hugging the turquoise glacial lake. It was a rainbow of color, like so many rainbows we saw against the post-rain backdrop of Iceland’s dramatic landscapes.
