Hoewel hij zijn eerste opnames al eind jaren 40 maakte, betekende Dexter Gordons contract bij Blue Note Records in 1961 het begin van een artistieke renaissance na een turbulent decennium. Met de snelle 'one-two punch' van zijn labeldebuut Doin’ Allright en Dexter Calling — beide opgenomen in mei 1961 met slechts drie dagen ertussen — bewees de grote tenorsaxofonist met verve dat hij weer helemaal terug was.

Dexter Calling presenteert een volledig andere bezetting, waarbij Dexter de leiding heeft over een krachtig kwartet met pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Paul Chambers en drummer Philly Joe Jones. De set opent met het soulvolle hardbop-juweeltje "Soul Sister", waarna het tempo omhoog gaat op energieke nummers als "Modal Mood", "I Want More" en "Clear the Dex". Voor de prachtige ballad "Ernie’s Tune" neemt Gordon gas terug, om de plaat vervolgens af te sluiten met een vrolijke vertolking van Charlie Chaplins "Smile".
