Deze beeldengroep inspireerde hem. Van 1900 tot 1908 verbleef hij in Rome om er de klassieke beeldhouwkunst te bestuderen. Epple ontwikkelde zich tot een klassiek geschoold beeldhouwer. Zijn beelden vielen in de smaak bij het Württenbergse hof en de rijk geworden fabrikanten. Zij waren aanvankelijk zijn belangrijkste opdrachtgevers.

Hij vestigde zich in München en had veel succes. Toen de Eerste Wereldoorlog uitbrak, trad hij in dienst. Na de oorlog kwam hij terug: gedesillusioneerd en (tijdelijk) invalide. Zijn vrouw verliet hem en hij zat financieel aan de grond.

Het tij keerde toen hij begin jaren twintig zijn tweede vrouw ontmoette. Hij verwierf belangrijke opdrachten voor beeldhouwwerken bestemd voor de openbare ruimte, die hij in een modernere, vereenvoudigde stijl vervaardigde. Het Naziregime noopte hem Duitsland te verlaten. Hij vestigde zich met zijn gezin in Nederland, waar hij als Exilkünstler moeite had voet aan de grond te krijgen.

Geïllustreerd met 300 afbeeldingen, wordt in Liefde en Kunst heersen Epples boeiende leven beschreven in de cultureel-artistieke en sociaal-maatschappelijke context van zijn tijd, waarin hij als gedreven kunstenaar arbeidde met als levensmotto: Amor et Ars regnant.

Meer over de auteur

Marjet van de Weerd- Baerveldt (Rotterdam 1944) studeerde, na vijfentwintig jaar in het middelbaar onderwijs te hebben gewerkt, cultuurwetenschappen aan de Open Universiteit. Na het behalen van haar Master begon ze een cultuurwetenschappelijk onderzoek naar de beeldhouwer Emil Epple.
