Mount Stalin (later Pik Communism, now Mount Garmo), the 24,600 foot peak in the Western Pamirs, Tajikistan, was discovered in 1913 by Diemler and Rickmers. 20

First edition. Mount Stalin (later Pik Communism, now Mount Garmo), the 24,600 foot peak in the Western Pamirs, Tajikistan, was discovered in 1913 by Diemler and Rickmers. 20 years later, a Russian scientific expedition to the area made the first successful ascent on Sept. 3 1933. There was for long much confusion about the heights and identities of these remote Tajik peaks. In 1962 Wilfrid Noyce and the young Scottish climber Robin Smith died in a fall after an ascent of the peak.
