Origin/Distribution: eastern North America from Ontario and Quebec to Pennsylvania and down into northern Florida, also moves west to Wisconsin and east Texas but is not native to Maine

Habitat: open woods, meadows, sunny stream banks, limestone, old field, roadside edge and railroad beds

More: C. tripteris is a host plant for several moth species including the Common Tan Wave Moth, Pleuroprucha insulsaria, which is native to Maine. Pollinators enjoy the flowers. This plant is a beautiful but strong grower with re-seeding tendencies (so deadhead spent blooms if necessary). Good companions are Andropogon gerardii, Sorghastrum nutans, Monarda fistulosa, and Eutrochium maculatum. See a theme here? Grow strong growers with other strong growers in a meadow situation.
