HEARD ISLAND, an improbably remote speck in the far Southern Ocean, lies four thousand kilometres to the south-west of Australia—with Antarctica its nearest continent. By 1964 it had been the object of a number of expeditions, but none reaching the summit of its 9000-foot volcanic peak â€Big Ben’. In that year Warwick Deacock resolved to rectify this omission, and as-sembled a party of nine with impressive credentials embracing mountaineering, exploration, science and medicine, plus his own organisation and leadership skills as a former Major in the British Army. But first they had to get there. Heard had no airstrip and was on no steamer route; the only way was by sea in their own vessel. Approached from Australia, the island lay in the teeth of the prevailing westerlies of the â€Roar-ing Forties’and â€Furious Fifties’. One name, only, came to mind as the skipper to navigate them safely to their destination, and safely home—the veteran mountaineer turned high-latitude sailor H. W. â€Bill’ Tilman, already renowned for his â€sailing to climb’ expeditions to Patagonia, Greenland and Arctic Canada, and the sub-Antarctic archipelagos of Crozet and Kerguelen, to the north-west of Heard Island. He readily â€signed on’ to Warwick Deacock’s team of proven individuals and their well-found sailing vessel Patanela. In this first-hand account, as fresh today as on its first publication fifty years ago, Philip Temple invites us all on this superbly conducted, h

This is a fantastic jacket for the price. I was very impressed by its appearance. I wore the jacket in Las Vegas and got so many compliments from both men and women. Pair this with a black turtleneck and you will be a superstar.

it caused a fight
Color: Gold, Size: X-Large
I completely mis-read the room.... I got this jacket as a White Elephant gag gift for our Christmas party. I thought it would be funny to see some 50-60 year old conservative dude open this up. There is nothing subtle about this jacket. It's bright. It's flashy. It's bold.
The guys fought over it. It was the most stolen gift of the night. When the first guy opened it, the whole party stopped for a minute while he proudly tried it on and everyone took pictures. And each time it was stolen, the same thing happened. The loser moped. The winner boasted. It was not at all the reaction I expected from this group - it was awesome!
And to top it off, a couple months later another guy in the group "borrowed" the jacket and wore it for his wedding. His wife - also part of our group - absolutely loved it!
He has no plans to return the jacket to any of the previous owners. Don't be surprised if you see a sparkling flash of light in the stands at a Vanderbilt basketball game! Their colors are black/gold, so he's going to make full use of the blazer!
Aside from making a great story for all of us, this jacket is very well made. The sequins are firmly attached. The sleeves are the right length, etc. It's comfortable to wear and the sizing feels accurate. I was expecting a "costume" piece, but actually got a quality blazer.

Quite good for costume quality
Color: Gold, Size: Medium
For eighty bucks this definitely isn't bad. It arrived slightly out of shape but after a few days on a good hanger, it all fell into place. I had no issues with fit--the medium wears as expected (6', 38" chest). It's a fun jacket, it's not far off from the product photos, and it certainly makes an impression. While it doesn't feel 'premium' per se, it doesn't feel cheap either. The liner is solid enough that the sequins don't feel too scratchy or restrictive. Definitely a niche item--certainly more of a costume piece than something you'd wear to make a bold impression at a formal event, and while not inexpensive, it delivers for the price and I don't think you could do much better for $80.
